Chapter 10

When I woke up, Adam wasn’t there. Raylene had fallen asleep on the couch, the embers were dying out in the fireplace. I put a couple more logs on and went to make some soup.

“So, now is your chance,” Raylene said, coming in the kitchen.

“For what?”

“To save Adam and you from the fate I was going to condemn you to.”

“No, I won’t do that to you.”

“Why not? I did it to you.”

“We both know now, there is no reason to push it further. There doesn’t have to be another ritual, or wedding. It can end here.” She smiled. She looked so sad. Is that even possible, how can a smile be sad?

“Okay.” For now, at least this can be put to rest. I didn’t know if it would last or for how long she would pretend she wouldn’t go through with it. But just from that one word, I could tell she would try again. I had to finish reading the journal.

June 1st

How do I choose? I never thought I would actually have to make the choice. I was naïve to think this day could be postponed indefinitely. I would not do what the Wilsons did. They told both and it ended in a blood bath, with one victor.

Will that happen with Raylene and me?

September 3rd

My wife and I chose. I hope we chose correctly, and I will not ask for forgiveness. To my future generations, if you are ever reading this, who will all also have to make this choice, I am sorry. I couldn’t lose her. I hope you understand I just never realized the price would be so high. In the moment, I thought anything was worth it. But now I see how terribly wrong I was.

October 12th

My wife could not live with the choice; she took her life today. The children didn’t know why; I can’t explain it to them. I still need to tell my oldest the rules.

I didn’t want to keep reading, but I knew I had to.

April 7th

I finally told my eldest about the ritual, the rules.

Must do before the age of 30.
